Douglas Adams (49) whimsical British novelist, author of the cult science fiction comedy The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (1979), the best-selling sci-fi humor series that introduced readers to a universe of preening two-headed aliens, manic-depressive robots, and space travelers who never parted with their bath towels. Adams died of an apparent heart attack in a Santa Barbara, California gym on May 11, 2001.

Jennifer Stahl (39) actress, dancer, and musician best known for her role as one of the dancers in the hit movie Dirty Dancing (1987). Stahl also appeared in several other films including Necropolis, Firehouse, I’m Your Man, and Identity Crisis. She was shot and killed during a robbery with two others at her New York City apartment on May 10, 2001.
